Two of the largest newspaper companies in the country may soon become one.

GateHouse Media (the owner of The Houma Courier and The Daily Comet) is nearing a purchase of Gannett, according to The Wall Street Journal and other national media outlets who have covered the story.

The reported purchase, which is said as being in “advanced talks”, would move Gannett’s papers under the GateHouse umbrella, though reports say there are still some issues to hash out before a final agreement can be reached and announced.

GateHouse and its publisher, New York-based New Media Investment Group, are owned by Fortress Investment Group, an investment management firm based in New York. Fortress is owned by parent company SoftBank Group in Japan.

The Japanese company’s holdings are wide-ranging in American media and also technology. Fortress also owns Sprint. Through GateHouse, Fortress owns almost 700 newspapers around the country, including The Courier, The Comet and several other well-known newspapers throughout the state and Southeast.

If successful in making a deal for Gannett, GateHouse would also be obtaining USA Today, as well as several newspapers in Louisiana.
