Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes will join forces Aug. 7 for the National Night Out Against Crime, letting criminals know their actions will not be tolerated.

National Night Out is a crime and drug prevention event sponsored by local law enforcement agencies as part of the National Association of Town Watch.

The program is designed to combat criminal activity in Tri-parish neighborhoods by generating support for and participation in the local anti-crime programs.

Local anti-crime programs include Drug Abuse Resistant Education (DARE) and Neighborhood Watch.

Local law enforcement agencies agree that the program can strengthen neighborhoods as well as police-community relationships. “We want to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back,” said Sgt. Laura Guise, with the Thibodaux Police Department.

The Tri-parish area celebrates national Night Out with a variety of activities, including block parties, parades, cookouts and visits to the local police and sheriff’s offices, along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front-porch vigils.

“National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in an effort to fight for a safer nation,” said Maj. Michael Dean, of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Office.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office has been participating in National Night Out for the past 11 years. Sheriff Craig Webre said he is happy to say that a record number of participants come out and support the event every year.

“By attending these informal gatherings, residents will make a strong statement against crime,” Webre said. “They will also have an opportunity to meet some of the men and women of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office who will be participating in these activities.”

For 24 years, National Night Out campaigns have been known for uniting citizens, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local law enforcement agencies from over 10,000 communities, representing all 50 states, for one night of fun.

More than 34 million people participated in National Night Out last year.
