Rushing Media and Guidry Group are merging, becoming one of the state’s largest independently-owned publishing companies.

Houma-based Rushing Media produces The Weekly, a classified newspaper that is circulated in five parishes, lifestyle magazine Point of Vue and a variety of niche publications. The products reach a combined audience in excess of 77,000 readers.

Owner Brian Rushing credits the 100 percent local coverage for his publications’ success.

Guidry Group, owned by Darrin Guidry, produces the Tri-Parish Times, named the Louisiana Press Association’s Newspaper of the Year seven years consecutively, Gumbo Entertainment Guide and Cajun Sportsman.

Combined the publications reach more than 40,000 readers in the Tri-parish region.

“I’m excited to add the products to our portfolio with two main goals: keeping them locally owned and expanding on the community content that has made them great,” Rushing said. “The way our publications and the strengths of our staffs compliment each other were icing on the cake.”

Rushing will oversee day-to-day operations of all the publications.

Guidry, who has been in media for over 30 years, first in radio and later print media, will assume a consultant role during the transition.

“I always want to move forward in my personal life and with building my company,” he said. “This allows me to do both and get some well-deserved rest and relaxation.”

Rushing’s immediate goal for the Tri-Parish Times is to expand on the newspaper’s community content, increasing its lifestyle focus.

“I think the editorial skills that Rushing Media has with our lifestyle content showcased in Point of Vue and the news-gathering experience shown with the T-PT staff will combine to make the strongest editorial team in our market,” Rushing said.
