A scam artist has been busily dialing St. Mary Parish phone numbers in an effort to gather vital credit and debit card information, according to Sheriff David Naquin.

After alerting card owners of an alleged problem, the caller goes about asking for card numbers and other identifying information from the card, the sheriff said. In more than one instance, the scammer has used the information obtained via the phone to try to access funds from accounts.

When one savvy person turned the tables and began questioning the caller, the sheriff said the scam artist hung up. Yet, another sign the call was likely bogus.

Naquin is advising residents not to give personal information to people whom you do not know, and to contact authorities after receiving such a call.

Residents with Caller ID are asked to relay the number from which the scammed call originated, the sheriff’s office said.
