With heavy storms expected in the region later today, Lafourche Parish schools and state government offices will close their doors early, while Terrebonne has not announced any closures.
The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for southeast Louisiana, ranging from Baton Rouge to southern Mississippi. The outlook carries a moderate risk for severe weather for the coastal region, while there will be conditions for tornadoes. The NWS issued a tornado watch for 22 parishes, including Terrebonne and Lafourche, effective until 5 p.m. According to the NWS, the I-10 corridor and those north of it face the greatest risk for severe weather.
In response to the threat of severe weather, Lafourche Parish public schools are dismissing early, with high schools and middle schools closing down at noon and elementary schools following at 12:45 p.m. The Terrebonne Parish School District announced that there will be no school closures at this point, and students not at school today will be marked absent.
The state announced that state government offices in Lafourche will also close at noon. Although Terrebonne’s public schools are remaining open, Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government announced it is closing its offices at noon for non-essential personnel. All Terrebonne Parish public libraries will close at 1 p.m. All Terrebonne public safety offices, utilities and public works essential personnel will remain operating.
Fletcher Technical Community College is closing at noon as well. Nicholls State University is canceling all afternoon classes, with staff and administration leaving the university at 1:30 p.m.
Private schools in Lafourche Parish have all announced early closures, while the Houma-Terrebonne Diocese announced around 10:30 a.m. all Catholic schools in Terrebonne Parish are closing early. Houma Christian School closed for the entire day, while Messiah Montessori is set to close at noon.
