Earl Meador was identified as being “passionate about technical college education” when he was announced Monday as being the new Lafourche Campus dean for South Central Louisiana Technical College.

“We are fortunate to have a leader as talented and knowledgeable about career and technical education as Earl Meador,” SLCTC Regional Director James R. ‘Jimmy’ Sawtelle said in a news release.”Earl brings a myriad of experience to the Lafourche Campus. Be it professional educator, community advocate, private sector executive, or lawyer – his skill-set is precisely what is needed.”

Meador’s career has involved filling a variety of positions with SCLTC, including instructor in the marine department, and filling an assignment as assistant dean of the Young Memorial Campus.

“I am honored to have this opportunity to serve in my own community at an educational facility dedicated to training the workers of tomorrow,” Meador said.

Meador holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, a juris doctorate from Loyola University School of Law, and a sixth issue 500 ton USCG Masters License.

“I am passionate about the value of technical education and credit my success to the technical education I obtained rather than the academic accomplishment,” Meador said in a prepared statement. “It is the technical education that supported my family while working through the university system to complete [my] studies … .”

Sawtelle credited Meador for his experience in a variety of senior management positions, including president of an offshore service company and operations/personnel manager of Aggressor Fleet, which operates luxury scuba diving yachts in 16 countries.

In his new position, Meador said he will partner with other local higher education entities such as Nicholls State University and Fletcher Technical Community College. “The needs of our students and the needs of the employers who employ our students are continually changing,” he said. “To continue to provide quality training, we must listen to the needs of our employers and be willing to be versatile and creative in our training. Somewhere along the way in our society, the expertise of the skilled craftsman began being perceived as less valued than a university education. This is just not true! University and technical educations are different in focus, but equal in value.”

More than 60,000 students are currently enrolled in the Louisiana Community and Technical College System throughout the state, which strives to provide the high demand, industry-sensitive training Louisiana needs. SCLTC is among the member colleges with campuses in Morgan City, Thibodaux, Reserve, and Galliano.

Meador was been named dean following the departure of Tony Tranchina, who left the college last month to enter the private sector.

Meador and his wife, Lori, live in Thibodaux.
