Nineteen children and adults completed a hunter’s safety class hosted by the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The 10-hour class was taught at the Patterson Civic Center. Instructors were Buddy Rogers, Bart Lange, and Ross Mire with the SMPSO. The class also visited the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Shooting Range in Franklin.

Anyone born on or after Sept. 1, 1969, must successfully complete the course and receive Louisiana Hunter Education Certification Card to obtain a state hunting license. The certification and card are recognized by all other states and provinces that require hunters to have completed a hunter education course. Only students age 10 or older are eligible for the certification, but courses are open to anyone.

Class availabilities may be viewed at www.wlf.louisiana.gov, and future dates in St. Mary Parish will be posted on the SMPSO Facebook page.
