Many residents have been confused when it comes to Terrebonne Parish property taxes. It has been confirmed that Terrebonne Parish property tax bills were mailed out this week after a delay and reassessment due to Hurricane Ida.

The deadline to pay 2021 taxes has been extended to January 31, 2022. The assessor has reduced the assessed value of residential structures by 10 percent, commercial structures by 15 percent, and camps by 20 percent in hopes to account for damage from Hurricane Ida. They reported that the assessments that were frozen were not reduced and those owners will need to apply at the assessor’s office for any reductions. If owners of residential or commercial buildings received substantial damage from the storm, they can also apply for further reductions at the assessor’s office or at tpassessor.org.

There are some items that are needed when applying. Make sure to have your insurance adjuster’s report. If the property wasn’t insured, you will need a contractor’s estimate or your receipts of the repairs done on the damaged property. They noted that pictures are not necessary unless proving the structure was torn down. They do not consider damages to fences or swimming pools.

As another way to help the citizens of Terrebonne Parish, the assessor also has overturned the previously adopted millage rate of 1.6. The office will not receive any taxpayer funds this year.

Terrebonne Parish Assessor Loney Grabert said in a letter to residents, “Our hearts and prayer go out to everyone affected by Hurricane Ida. My office understands that majority of the homes and structures in the Parish were damaged by Hurricane Ida.” He ended the letter by saying, “My staff and I are committed to the residents of our Parish and are here to help during this time of need. Please call our office if you have any questions or concerns.”

Tax payers can also pay online beginning this week at www.tpso.net. Select “tax notices”. Questions regarding property ownership and assessment should be directed to the office of the Terrebonne Parish Assessor at (985) 876-6620. For additional information on payment call the Sheriff’s Office at (985) 876-2500.
