Houma Fire responding to fire near West Tunnel

From TPSO:

Sheriff Tim Soignet reminds anyone planning on using fireworks in Terrebonne Parish to celebrate the coming of 2021 be aware of the date and time restrictions contained in the ordinance passed by the Parish Council.

Sheriff Soignet notes that fireworks may NOT be used anywhere within the city limits of Houma. See note below to help determine if you are in the city limits.

Outside of the city, fireworks may be used ONLY from dusk on Thursday, Dec. 31, until 1 a.m. on Jan. 1, and from dusk on Friday, Jan. 1 until 10 p.m.

Sheriff Soignet offers these safety tips:

  • Be extra careful with sparklers. They can heat up to as much as 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, so they should never be handled by small children.
  • Small children should not ignite fireworks, and everyone should keep a safe distance from them once ignited.
  • Do not wear loose-fitting clothing.
  • Point fireworks away from structures, vehicles and anywhere that could pose a risk
  • If a device does not go off as planned never stand over it to figure out what happened. Douse it with water and move on to the next.
  • If an eye injury occurs do not rub it, as this can cause further injury.
  • Always have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby.

“As with anything else, we expect people to make wise decisions when it comes to using fireworks,” Sheriff Soignet said. “Please show courtesy to your neighbors by following the time restrictions. I wish everyone a successful and healthy 2021.”

FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW IF THEY ARE WITHIN CITY LIMITS, THE BEST WAY TO DETERMINE IS TO KNOW WHO PROVIDES YOUR EMERGENCY SERVICES. IF YOUR SERVICES ARE PROVIDED BY THE HOUMA POLICE OR HOUMA FIRE DEPARTMENTS, YOU ARE IN THE CITY AND SO ARE IN A PLACE WHERE FIREWORKS ARE BANNED.
