The American Heart Association recognized Terrebonne General Medical Center last week for its treatment of patients who suffer cardiac arrests in the hospital.

The medical center received the Get With The Guidelines Resuscitation Silver Quality Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association on adult cardiac arrest patients.

Guidelines include following protocols for patient safety, medical emergency team response, effective and timely resuscitation and post-emergency care. TGMC qualified for the award by demonstrating compliance with these performance measures for a prolonged period of time.

“We are pleased to recognize TGMC for their commitment in following these guidelines,” Get With The Guidelines steering committee national chairman Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt said in a release. “Shortening the time to effective resuscitation and maximizing post-resuscitation care is critical to patient survival.”

According to the American Heart Association, more than 200,000 people have an in-hospital cardiac arrest each year, and the Get With The Guidelines Resuscitation program was developed to save lives by following the most current research-based guidelines for treatment.

“I’m very proud to be a part of a facility that encourages and supports the improvement of quality patient care,” said TGMC Director of Critical Care and Critical Care Registered Nurse Lucetta Sweet. “It is a privilege that we have such a great group of individuals who work together as a team in order for us to achieve this award. This could not have been accomplished without the efforts of the physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapist here at TGMC working together. I look forward to continuing our application of the most up to date scientific guidelines in an effort to save more lives threatened by cardiac emergencies.”

TGMC is the only hospital in a 30-mile radius to have achieved this award, and TGMC President and CEO Phyllis Peoples said that the hospital didn’t have to modify its guidelines too much to apply and win the award because the medical center has always provided a high standard of care.

“[People] choose Terrebonne general for quality. [People] choose Terrebonne general because people trust us. People trust that if they come here we’re going to save their family… It shows that we know what we’re doing when people need us most,” Peoples said.
