A Thibodaux High School senior was arrested yesterday for allegedly taking a gun to the school’s campus.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said this afternoon that Brennan Garman, 17, of Thibodaux, was arrested after administrators were notified about a weapon being inside his vehicle, while on school grounds.

Garman is a senior at Thibodaux and is a standout defensive end on the Tigers football team, which finished its season last Friday in the State Playoffs. Standing 6-foot, 1-inch and weighing 226 pounds, it is widely expected that he is going to be given an opportunity to continue his playing career at the collegiate level, if he chooses to do so.

The release said Garman was charged with carrying a firearm by a student at school.

He was released on Wednesday night after posting a $1,000 bond.

Authorities said Garman didn’t have plans to use the weapon and no one was threatened in the incident.

Yesterday morning, a school administrator made contact with Thibodaux’s School Resource Officer after learning that Garman possibly had a firearm in his vehicle.

The officer made contact with the suspect and escorted him to the vehicle, and Garman allegedly admitted to having the 9 mm weapon inside the center console of the vehicle.

The officer secured the weapon and placed Garman under arrest.

Upon investigation, authorities said the student wasn’t intending to use the gun on campus and had it in his vehicle as a means of self-defense.

Attempts to contact Thibodaux High School administration were not successful on Thursday afternoon.
