Three members of a south Lafourche family were killed Monday night when a pickup they were in careened across a highway and plunged into Bayou Lafourche.

Shortly before Midnight Monday Louisiana State Police Troop C troopers responded to La. Highway 308 near East 165th Street in Golden Meadow. According to Trooper First Class Jesse LaGrange, 37-year-old Michael Barthelemy of Galliano was operating a 2005 Nissan Frontier northbound on the highway. His passengers were his daughter, 2-year-old Trisha Barthelemy and a nephew, 17-year-old Zackary Cheramie of Golden Meadow.

Preliminary investigation, LaGrange said, indicates that the pickup veered off the roadway to the right while Barthelemy was on a left curve. The driver, troopers surmise, overcorrected to the left, causing him to cross La. 308. The pickup then ran off the roadway and into Bayou Lafourche.

“Barthelemy and his two passengers were unable to exit his vehicle and they were pronounced deceased on scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office,” LaGrange said.

Troopers do not know whether impairment was a factor, and standard toxicology reports pending. Barthelemy, LaGrange said, was wearing a seat belt and the toddler was properly restrained in a car seat. Zackary Cheramie, LaGrange said, was not restrained.

The incident continues to be under investigation.
