A Raceland toddler was swept away by waters in a flood-swollen drainage canal Tuesday afternoon and later died in a local hospital.

According to information gathered from local responders the child, 3-year-old Remy Dufrene, was playing in his back yard on Holiday Drive shortly before 1:30 p.m.

Lafourche Parish deputies who responded to a 911 call were told that Dufrene’s caretaker went outside to retrieve him and that he ran away, falling into a usually-dry drainage ditch.

The toddler’s grandparents tried to rescue him but were not successful; deputies searched the canal and surrounding areas. About 15 minutes into the search, Sheriff Craig Webre said, the boy’s father located him in a patch of weeds, about 75 yards downstream.

Resuscitation efforts were attempted but did not succeed and the boy was pronounced dead at Ochsner St. Anne Hospital.

Flooding of streets, streams and ditches occurred throughout Lafourche Parish Tuesday as a result of heavy rains throughout the day. Schools were closed early. Caution has been advised due to incidents of flash-flooding.

Dufrene was rushed to Ochsner St. Anne Hospital where he was placed on life support, but later expired.

“During times such as these, words are hard to come by which can express our deep sorrow for the loss of a young life,” Lafourche Parish Sheriff Webre said.
