The clock begins ticking for the members of the Terrebonne Parish School Board, as well as every other school board across the state, effective Jan. 1, 2015.

On the Nov. 6, 2012, ballot, a proposal that would enact term limits for school board members was voted in favor of unanimously throughout Louisiana, with the exception of Jefferson and Lafayette parishes who already had term limits in place.

School board members can serve up to three terms, resetting the clock for those who have been re-elected this cycle.

“It all starts brand new right now,” Terrebonne Parish School Board President Roger DeHart said. “It is a new mandate. Whether you had opposition or not, the new board takes office in January.”

DeHart will enter his seventh term as representative of District 7 on Jan. 1.

“Even though I am on my seventh term, the new law implies that no one has any terms accounted for,” DeHart said.

Other Terrebonne School Board members include:

• Gregory Harding District 2, entering fifth term

• Richard “Dicky” Jackson District 3, entering second term

• Debra “Debi” Benoit District 4, entering second term

• Brenda Leroux Babin District 5, entering second term

• L.P. Bordelon III District 6, entering fifth term

• Donald “Don” Duplantis District 8, entering fifth term

Districts 1 and 9 are headed toward run-offs. Incumbent Roosevelt Thomas will face Joe Thompson for District 1. Thomas is finishing up his fourth term.

Meanwhile, incumbent Hayes Badeaux faces off with Vicki Bonvillain for the District 9 seat. Badeaux is also wrapping up his fourth term.

Once the run-offs are complete, come Jan. 1 all nine of the members will have 12 years left to serve as a school board member for Terrebonne Parish.
