October 28, 2014Trick-or-treaters will be out en force Friday night, and local authorities are urging the public to take note.
Thibodaux and Houma Police will be patrolling to ensure public safety. Trick-or-treating hours are 6 to 8 p.m., authorities said.
Law enforcement agencies ask citizens to employ a few common-sense rules to ensure everyone has a safe night of fun.
• Parents or other responsible adults should accompany small children.
• Establish a curfew for older children.
• Advise your youngsters not to enter a stranger’s house.
• Stay in heavily populated areas, avoiding cane fields or other deserted areas.
• Hand out only packaged candy and check your child’s candy for pre-opened packaging.
• Reflectors, glow sticks or flashlights are advised to help motorists clearly see trick-or-treaters.
• Look both ways before crossing the street, and report any suspicious or criminal activity.
• Motorists are reminded to drive under the speed limit to avoid accidents.
• Parents are advised to serve a large meal so their children will not be tempted to eat any candy before bringing it home to be checked.
• Make sure children can see through masks or use cosmetics as an alternative.
• Costumes should not be too long to prevent tripping.
• If making your own costume, choose material that is not flammable. Flammable materials include dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper.
• Use battery-operated candles or jack-o-lanterns if possible. If real candles are used, make sure to keep them well attended.
• Keep decorations clear of any exits if hosting a Halloween party. Familiarize your guests with all exits in the event of an emergency.
Taking extra precautions can save a life.
