Local officials were monitoring the development of Tropical Storm Nate Thursday morning, as the system marshaled for an expected northerly trek toward the U.S. Gulf coast.

Terrebonne Parish President Gordon Dove declared a parish-wide state of emergency at noon today. The declaration streamlines government’s ability to respond to crises by suspending local procurement procedures during the state of emergency. The Terrebonne Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is advising residents to clear ditches in preparation for expected high tides and the potential for rain as soon as Saturday.

At 11 a.m. the system was located about 30 miles northwest of Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. Nate was moving northwest at 9 mph.

A turn to the north-northwest is expected later Thursday, continuing through Friday night.

Terrebonne and Lafourche are included in a coastal flood advisories issued by the National Weather Service, which predicts coastal flooding up to two feet above normal tide levels through Friday. Higher tides and potential storm surge flooding are likely late Saturday into Sunday. Minor flooding of low-lying roadways along coastal areas outside of hurricane protection levees and gates is likely through Saturday. More significant flooding could occur in those areas Saturday and Sunday.
