A tropical storm warning has been issued for Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parish as a possible tropical cyclone continues to spin in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.
Forecasters now say it’s almost a certainty that Tropical Cyclone No. 16 will develop in the Gulf, giving it a 90 percent chance of becoming a named storm in the next 48 hours.
The system, located at 22.4 N and 95.7 W is drifting to the north, but is expected to move to the northeast over the next 48-72 hours before landfall.
The system is expected to be little more than a rainmaker. Forecasts call for it to be a 50 mph tropical storm at landfall.
Radar loops show rain and windy conditions throughout Friday and into Saturday as the system approaches the coast. It’s forecast to approach the mouth of the Mississippi River, but just graze Louisiana as it makes landfall near the panhandle of Florida.
