Two Vandebilt Catholic High School students have been named National Merit Scholars.

The school sent out a news release this morning announcing that seniors Gabe Hohensee and Madelyn Rodrigue earned the honor, continuing the tradition for academic excellence at the local school.


According to the release, about 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools around the country entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Hohensee and Rodrigue earned the honor and were named Commended Students from the National Merit Scholarship Program after they ranked among the top 30 percent of PSAT scorers in the nation.

The students will join about 34,000 commended students throughout the national who will now all be recognized for their exceptional academic promise.


Gabe Hohensee is the son of Becky and Garett Hohensee, of Houma.

Madelyn Rodrigue is the daughter of Heidi and Michael Rodrigue, of Houma.

“These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in the nation,” a spokesperson from the NMSC commented in an announcement of the recipients.


With the honorees, Vandebilt has now had 43 students receive a National Merit Scholarship Program honor.
