On May 16, the Terrebonne Economic Development Authority (TEDA) — in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) — will host the WomenPreNeurship Conference at the Theodore L. Duhe Building, 235 Civic Center Blvd. in Houma.

“The WomenPreNeurship Conference aims to foster entrepreneurship, innovation and growth while increasing knowledge and access to business capital among startups, as well as small and medium-sized businesses in the region,” reads a press release by TEDA.

After the doors open for the business summit at 8:30 Thursday morning, attendees will get to interact with and learn from several organizations that can assist in starting and growing a business, such as TEDA, SBA, LSBC, Women Business Resource Center, Louisiana Economic Development, Veteran Business Start-Up Advisor and Regions Bank, among other entities.

“You have the opportunity to attend an event where a number of resources are in one location,” said Katherine Gilbert-Theriot, Director of Business Retention & Expansion for TEDA. “If you want to start a business, in the process of starting one or have a business and want to grow it, all of your resources are going to be in one place, at one time for a morning.”

Gilbert-Theriot noted that there will be panel discussions as well as opportunities for one-on-one engagements.

Although the event is geared towards present and future women entrepreneurs and will have discussions led by successful business women from various fields, registration — which can be completed at www.eventbrite.com/e/sba-womenpreneur-business-resource-summit-tickets-61177712184 and is requested by TEDA — is open to everyone.

Small business owners, public officials, community leaders, veterans, resource partners, media personal as well as all residents in and around Terrebonne, Lafourche and Assumption Parishes are encouraged to attend.

The conference is also free to attend.

“When you’re gauging activities for a healthy economy, something you want to do is provide support to those entrepreneurs, whether they’re in business already or they’re not,” Gilbert-Theriot said. “We have a very rich history in the region of people who are very good at a particular skill — be it professional service or a hands on skillset. They don’t always pursue not only education but the ancillary resources that government and nonprofit agencies bring to the table to aid them.”

TEDA’s mission is to help the entire business community of Terrebonne Parish — from startups to existing small and large businesses. The organization (located in Suite 701 of the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government Tower, 8026 W Main St.) provides help by offering business-skills training opportunities, giving technical and marketing assistance, supplying economic and population data and much more.

“We look for ways to aide, assist and support businesses of all sizes in the Parish so that they can continue to grow and prosper,” Gilbert-Theriot added.

In addition to helping out local businesses, TEDA also helps individuals preparing to enter the workforce. They recently helped organize and market a job fair held last month where over 40 companies were in attendance.
