Jerome “Zee” Zeringue has unofficially won the race for the State Legislature’s 52nd District by a mere six votes.

With 100 percent of the tallies in, Zeringue, a Republican, finished with 5,049 votes. His opponent and fellow Republican J.J. Buquet won 5,043 votes.

The result is still unofficial as of press time, as the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office has to confirm the vote later this week. If the result holds, Zeringue will take over the spot currently held by Gordon Dove, the Terrebonne Parish President-elect.

In a post on his campaign’s Facebook page, Buquet admitted that the election night count is usually accurate, and thanked his supporters.

“Well gang – after 9,400 plus votes – it seems we came up short by 6. I’m still trying to wrap my head around that this morning. I would like to thank everyone for all of the tremendous support and encouragement over these past 8-9 months,” Buquet said.

Zeringue, the former executive director of the Coastal Restoration and Protection Authority, thanked his supporters in a post on his campaign’s page. Zeringue is slated to assume office at noon on Monday, Jan. 11. •
