Alex James Samanie, 89, a native and resident of Houma, La., died at 2:44 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009.


Mr. Samanie was a parishioner of Holy Rosary and a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local No. 1846 and a Purple Heart, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation recipient. He also served in Africa, Normandy Beach, Sicily, and Northern France Rhineland.

He is survived by his wife, Nelly Lorin Samanie; daughters, Pierrette Todaro, Francoise McKeever, Marilyn Fitch and Gail Russick; 12 grandchildren, Patty and Victor Todaro Jr., Raymond Decoux, Lauren Nesbitt, Gary, Timmy and Tony Fitch, Terrie Fitch Wooten, Michele R. Perry, Michael Russick, Anna Marie R. Kerleg and James R. Conner; 22 great-grandchildren, Bradley Porche, Victoria Rodriguez, Alexander Nasbitt, Randa Smith, Garred, Hannah, Stevens, Brandon and Ryan Fitch, Candace Domangue, Justin and Alicie Gauthier, Charles, Taylor and Isabella Perry, James, Danielle and Rachael Russick, and Shane and Dylan Conner, Alexandra and Samantha Kerleg; and four great-great-grandchildren, Xadrian Porche, Madison Fitch, Peyton Domangue and Emily Russick.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferdinand and Marie Lirette Samanie; sons-in-law, Victor Todaro, Charles Fitch and James Russick; one great-grandson, Sterling A. Nesbitt; brothers, Gordon, Berwick and Rene Samanie; and sisters, Genevieve Chauvin, Idola Cunningham, Beatrice Cenac, Irene Robichaux and Tesia Verrett.
