Dr. Allen Joseph Ellender, 93, a native and resident of Houma, La., died Saturday, May 10, 2014.


Dr. Ellender spent his entire life in the role of service to others. He completed his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La., while serving in the U.S. Army Air Force. He practiced surgery for more than 20 years and industrial medicine for more than a decade. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was the chief of staff at Terrebonne General Hospital in 1963 and was a board member for six years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working in his yard and was a parishioner of St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church.

He is survived by his sons, Allen III, Gerald, William, Michael, Claude, Charles, David, Jules, Frank and Elward Ellender; daughters, Maria Florek, Sister Lucia Ellender OCD and Carmen Waitz; 29 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and longtime family friend and devoted caregiver, Laura Collins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ligia Ellender; and parents, Allen Sr. and Helen Ellender.


Visitation will be 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, at St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial to follow. Burial will be at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2. (Chauvin)
