Anna Hanley Bourgeois, a life long resident of Lockport, La., and a retired second grade teacher for 30 years for the Lafourche Parish School Board, died peacefully Sunday, March 2, at Ochsner St. Anne General Hospital in Raceland, La. She was 96 years old born October 7, 1911.

She was the mother of one daughter, Anna Marie Bourgeois and two sons, Fernand J. (F.J.) Bourgeois Jr. and wife, Julie, and Thomas J. (Tommy) Bourgeois of Baton Rouge, La.

“Miss Anna” was one of eleven children of whom ten received college degrees producing three doctors and six educators. She is survived by one sister, Lolita H. DeFelice of Raceland; one brother, Dr. Robert Hanley of Lockport; five grand children; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fernand (Fifi) J. Bourgeois Sr.; daughter, Kathleen Mary Bourgeois; parents, John P. Sr. and Anna Fleming Hanley; brothers, John P. Hanley Jr., Dr. Fleming Hanley, Dr. Patrick Hanley, Lawrence Hanley, William Hanley, Lionel Hanley; and sisters, Maud H. Kringle and Alice H. Miller.

She began her teaching career in 1931 at Cut Off High School and retired in 1973 from Lockport Lower Elementary. In her early years of teaching, she coached the Lockport girls high school basketball team as a volunteer coach winning the district championship two years in a row.

She was an avid LSU sports fan and enjoyed many years of attending LSU football games in Baton Rouge and away games. When she was not able to attend any more, she enjoyed watching the games on TV. Every morning she enjoyed drinking her coffee and reading the sports section of the newspaper.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the Ochsner St. Anne nursing staff for attending to their mother with such care and kindness.

Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, at Holy Savior Catholic Church in Lockport with the funeral to follow.

Falgout Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
