Donald Louis Charles, 70, a native of Terrebonne Parish, La., and a resident of Columbia, S.C., died Tuesday, April 28, at 6:50 p.m.


He is survived by his mother, Sadie Westley Charles; the mother of his children, Louvenia Charles; son, Shawn and wife Yolanda Charles, of Columbia; daughters, Joyce Adams of Columbus, Ga., and Carmelita and husband Tyronne Villavasso of Harvey, La.; adopted children, Angela Charles, Sherneka Charles, Daniel Simmons and Albert Albohaire; brothers, James and wife Bernadine Charles, Leroy and wife Rhonda Charles of Houma, La., Robert Charles Sr. of Chicago, Ill., and Larry Charles Sr. of Hartford, Conn.; sister, Joyce Bolden of Houma; and 13 grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Charles Sr.; infant son, Donald Louis Charles Jr.; brothers, Renard Charles and Benjamin Charles Jr.; maternal grandparents, Eddie and Rebecca Neville Westley; and paternal grandparents, Edmond and Martha Harding Charles.

He was a retired teacher and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, May 8, at Howard Third Zion Travelers Baptist Church in Houma. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with interment at St. Luke Baptist Church Cemetery in Dularge, La.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
