Dorothy Bonvillain-Steverson, 84, a resident of Houma, La., died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012.

Mrs. Steverson was an active member of First Zion Baptist Church and served as the leader of the No. 2 Youth Choir. Her children’s education was a high priority and countless hours were spent with flash card drills. She loved poetry and would have her children and relatives memorize and recite poems. She was well known for volunteering in the school system and many people have credited her for steering them in the right direction when they were young. She always spoke her mind and encouraged others to do the same. She loved to visit family, travel and play bingo.

She is survived by her daughters, Kellena Steverson, Sandra (Amos) Burns and Karen (Monroe) Coleman; son: Kelmer Steverson Jr.; sisters: Emma Bonvillain, Mary Nixon and Delores (Norman) Johnson; brothers, James (Joyce) and Paul Bonvillain; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at Morning Star Baptist Church in Houma with services to follow. Burial will be at Celestin Garden of Memories. (Jones)
