Law enforcement makes arrest in 15-year-old priest murder case

Ernest “Gene” Hanes, 79, a native and resident of Houma, La., died Friday, September 14, 2007, at 5:40 p.m., just short of his 80th birthday, after a long illness.


He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Smith Hanes; one son, William E. Hanes II; two daughters, Tauny Prejeant and her husband Mike and Jeannie Chretien and her husband Steve; one brother, Oliver Leanard; two sisters, Margie Parker and Theresa Mardis; four grandchildren, Chad and Lauren Prejeant and Nick Chretien and Sindra Hane Dupre and her husband Travis; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew Dupre and Kristen Marcel.


He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ernest and Thelma Yelverton Hanes; and one brother-in-law, Rev. John Parker.

Ernest was a retired civil engineer for 38 years with Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co., Tenneco/El Paso. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and received several commendations, Asiatic Pacific Theater, Victory ribbon. He was a nondenominational Christian and a member of Assembly Church of God. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and gunsmith, but his favorite hobby was golf. He was a loving father and took great pride in his legacy; his three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Visitation is Monday, September 17, 2007, from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m., with a Military Service and Celebration of Life to follow at Chauvin Funeral Home.

Chauvin Funeral Home of Houma is in charge of the arrangements.
