Ethel Melancon, 96, a native of Oil City, La., and resident of Houma, La., died at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2011.


Mrs. Melancon was a parishioner of Maria Immacolata Catholic Church. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She was a Gold Star Mother. She was a member of the Altar Society of Saint Gregory Catholic Church. She was an active YMCA member. She was a Presidents Club member of Avon Product Inc. cosmetics. She received over twenty Albee awards. The most loving mother in the world. She was loved by everyone who knew her. She was considered by Father Mike Bergeron as his spiritual mother.

She is survived by her son, John (Lisa) Melancon; daughters, Alice (Kent) Soudelier; Linda Melancon Songy; and Ellen Melancon Dillard; sisters, Betty (Richard) Clark; daughter-in-law, Ina (Rob) Landkamer; and 12 grandchildren, Kent Jr. (Barbara Coe) and Craig (Kristen) Soudelier, Michelle (Randall) Ell, Lynn (Scott) Pappas, Stephanie (Jody) White, Lee Dillard; Julie’ (Jacob) Nolfo, John Jr., Collin and Teche Melancon, Robin Boone and Courtney Roy; and 13 great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Cale Soudelier, Darby, Jack and Riley Pappas, Grant and Sarah Ell, Olivia and Karoline Guidry, Jordan White, Brayden Dillard, Thane Tippet and Tristan Nolfo.


She was preceded in death by her husband, James Raymond Melancon Sr.; parents, Jules and Leoncia Thibodeaux Hardy; one son, James Melancon Jr.; half-brother, Saul LeBlanc; brother-in-law, James Dewey Welch Sr.; son-in-law, Stanley Songy Jr.; and grandchildren, Mary Clair Melancon and Scott Landkamer.

She is buried at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2.
