Flossie Matherne, 97, a native of Gheens, La. and resident of Larose, La. died Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at 2:40 p.m.


She is survived by her four sons, Nelson Matherne and his wife Rita, Wilson Matherne and his wife Irene, Wesley Matherne and his wife Mary, and Anthony Mathern and his wife Mary; three daughters, Ruth Matherne and her husband Horace, Madeline Ockman, and Earline Estay and her companion Horace Adams; one brother, Herbert Plaisance; one sister, Doris Marcombe; 30 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; 33 great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Matherne; her parents, Earnest and Mathile Plaisance; one son, Mack Mathern and his wife Peggy; three son-in-laws, Elliot Marcombe, Melvin Ockman, and Napoleon Estay; one infant daughter; three sisters, Inez Dufrene, Irene Frickey, and Lucille Plaisance; five brothers, Sidney, Euzebe, Whitney, Edward, and Herman Plaisance; one grandson, London Estay; and one granddaughter, Kitty Guidry.


Flossie was a homemaker and a grocery store owner. She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed having all of her family around her. She was a founding member of the Bayou Gauche Pentecostal Church.

Visitation is Monday, November 26, 2007, from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., with the funeral to follow at Samart-Mothe Funeral Home in Cut Off, La. She will be buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cut Off.

In lieu of flowers the family asks donations can be made to St. Joseph Hospice of Thibodaux and the American Breast Cancer Association.

Samart-Mothe Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
