Hazel Little Abernathy, 105, a native of Magee, Ms., and resident of Houma, La. died Thursday, November 8, 2007, at 11:38 a.m.


She is survived by nine grandchildren, Joy Tingle and her husband Mike, C.E. Bridges, Jr. and his wife Melba, Sandy Scheuermann and her husband Larry, Mike Bridges and his wife Bonnie, Carol Williams and her husband Richard, David Bridges, Ricky Mays and his wife Marla, Randy Mays and his wife Kim, and Jane Ann Mort and her husband Mike; 15 great-grandchildren, Suzanne Tingle Vicknair and her husband Gawain, Michelle Tingle, Corey Bridges, Jennifer Bridges Hebert and her husband Travis, Joshua Bridges and his wife Jenny, Leslie Scheuermann, Edward Scheuermann, Sharon Bridges White and her husband Lee, Jessica Bridges, Scot, Eric, and Ashley Mays, Shawna Mays, Randy and Adam Westmoreland; and 10 great-grandchildren, Griffin and Harrison Vicknair, Michael and Molly White, Faith, Shania, and Monique Hebert and Cane, Abby, and Mackenzie Bridges.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Abernathy; her parents, John Richmond and Nettie Burnham Little; two daughters, Nellie Bridges and her husband Ed, and Peggy Mays and her husband Bobby; one grandchild, Vicky Mays Westmoreland; one great-grandchild, C.E. Bridges III; one brother, Dwight Little; and four sisters, Loyre Evertee, Olgie Mae Lentz, Mary Lois Taylor, and Roma Dale Allen.


Hazel was a devout Methodist and a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a retired teacher with Terrebonne Parish School Board, a member of Nicholls Alumni Association, and Terrebonne Parish Retired Teachers Association.

She is buried in Terrebonne Memorial Park Cemetery in Houma.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund; or MacDonell United Methodist Children’s Home; or the Nicholls State University College of Education Alumni Association.

Chauvin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
