Irene Marie Alexina Landry Brady, 100, a native of Thibodaux, La., died Thursday, March 31, 2011.


Mrs. Brady attended Mount Carmel Convent, Thibodaux High School and graduated from LSU earning a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics in 1933. In 1945, she, along with her husband John, purchased the Leeville Telephone Company, renaming it Lafourche Telephone Company, and eventually SJI. She was a founding member of the Golden Meadow Woman’s Club and Les Artistes de Bayou. Irene loved to paint, sew, cook, entertain, play contract bridge and Scrabble, work crossword puzzles with a pen, speak fluent French and was an avid fisherman. She and her husband loved to travel and visited every U.S. state, most continents, and close to a hundred countries. In 1954, they reigned as king and queen of the Krewe of Mid City’s Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans. She was also a member of the Fort Pickens Chapter and Daughters of the American Revolution.


She is survived by her children, Tanya Ditto, and John Jr. (Clara Callais) and James (Kate Cheramie) Brady; 11 grandchildren; and 27 great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ansel Brady Sr.; parents, Sylvester and Eliza Perez Landry; stepmother, Betty Hollis Landry; son, John Ansel Brady Jr.; and son-in-law, William Ditto.
