James Joseph Whitney Sr., 87, a native and resident of Houma, La., died Monday, Sept. 14, at 6:15 a.m.


He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Rosemary Songe Whitney; three sons, James Whitney Jr. and wife Mona, John Whitney and fiancé Kathie Bunton, and Jeffrey Whitney and wife Lisa; two daughters, Rebecca (Becky) Kreller and husband Mike, and Rose (Beth) Hebert and husband Mark; nine grandchildren, James Whitney III, Mike Kreller, Kasie Whitney Chaisson, Jennifer Kreller, Matthew Whitney, Monica Whitney Blanchard, Corey Whitney, Jesse Hebert and Hunter Whitney; four great-grandchildren; Conner Chaisson, Anaya Whitney, Jillian Kreller and Kennedy Whitney; two brothers, Louis and Milton (Bud); and 12 sisters, Tootie, Jeanne, Doty, Evelyn, Virginia, Barbara, Margaret, Catherine, Judy, Rose, Anne and Anita.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hayes Whitney Sr. and Maude Bergeron Whitney; one brother, Hayes Whitney Jr.; two sisters, Bessie Waguespack and Roberta Farris; and one grandson, Jeremy Whitney.


He was an aircraft mechanic and a union electrician with the local 130 in New Orleans, La. He served during World War II with the U.S. Navy on the island of Guam in the Pacific and during the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force in Albuquerque, N.M. He was an active parishioner of Annunziata Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, being outdoors, traveling and making people laugh. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be missed by all.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Annunziata Catholic Church with the funeral service to follow. Burial will be at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cemetery.

Chauvin Funeral Home in Houma is in charge of the arrangements.
