John A. “Johnny” Akers, 69, a native of Blytheville, Ark., and a resident of Chauvin, La., died Friday, February 1, 2008.


He is survived by his wife, Shirley Couvillion Akers; grandchildren, Carla and husband Kevin Ghere, Carolyn William III, Jonathan and Steven Tillman; great-grandchildren, Shelby and Dylan Ghere and Kaleb Kleinert; daughters, Jeronda and husband John Mallory, Shawn and husband Gordon “Red Bird” and Linda Tillman; brother, Jim Akers and his wife Melva, of Kennett, Mo.; pallbearers, William, Jonathan and Kevin Tillman, Gordon Guidry, James Willett and Luis Martinez; and sister, Libby and husband Paul Dennis, of Kennett.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Murrell and Beulah Wright Akers; brothers, Bobby and Wayne Akers, and sisters, Betty Porter, Ruby Burton, Cleta Jones and Dorothy Akers.


John sold produce out of his truck and was often seen on La. 56 and was frequently referred to as “The Potato Man.”

In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred.

He was buried in St. Eli Cemetery.
