Retired Lt. Col. John H. Dowling, 77, a native of Chester, S.C., and a resident of Thibodaux, La., died following a courageous battle with cancer, Monday, June 9.


He is survived by his wife, Sonja; one son, John F. Dowling of San Antonio, Tx.; two daughters, Stephanie Dowling of Pennsylvania and June Dowling of Bonn, Germany; three stepchildren, Lisa Elosta of Marietta, Ga., Sheri Harper Mclin of Baton Rouge, La., and Rebecca Fite of Algiers, La.; one brother, McIver Dowling of Marietta; and two sisters, Trudy Snell of Marietta and Carol Mouchet of Savannah, Ga.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Jutta Dowling; and his parents, Martha Hardin Dowling and Ben Dowling.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Clemson College and served 24 years in the U.S. Army. Seventeen years of his military career was spent stationed out of the country. He was awarded the Bronze Star for service in Vietnam.

The family would like to thank Thibodaux Funeral Home for their support and the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery Service Detachment for the military funeral honors.

Memorial service and burial was held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. Christian graveside service was presented by Major Stephen Turner.
