John Louis Saia, 89, a native and resident of Houma, La., died at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012.

Mr. Saia was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He and his brothers expanded Saia Motor Freight Line, opening terminals throughout Louisiana and the Sunbelt states. He became chief financial officer and director of main office operations for the company until his retirement. He was an avid sportsman enjoying fishing and hunting and was a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral.


He is survived by his wife, Helen Saia; daughter, Jeanne Saia; brother, Vincent Saia; sister, Rita Ayers; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Christine and Louis Saia; daughter, Schere Marullo; sister, Christine Jones; and brother, Louis Saia Jr.

Burial was at Saint Francis de Sales Cemetery #2. (Chauvin)
