Kirby Etienne Cheramie, 91, a resident of Golden Meadow, La., died suddenly at his daughter’s home in Shreveport, La., on Sunday, March 7, 2010.

An Extraordinary Minister of Communion at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church, Mr. Cheramie was an independent contract welder for several oil and gas operations in the South Lafourche area. He retired in 1984.


He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Felicia Ledet Rizzo Cheramie; brothers, Athanas Griffin of Larose, and Mack of Galliano, White of Golden Meadow, and Edison Cheramie of Galliano; sisters, Jeanette Nun of Brownsville, Texas, and Elois Griffin of Galliano; son, Kenneth Cheramie of Golden Meadow; daughter, Brenda (Rick) Nichols of Shreveport; six grandchildren, Penny Cheramie of Golden Meadow, Kendalyn (Shawn) Besson of Thibodaux, Shellie (Patrick) Besson of Thibodaux, Stephanie (Norm) Self of Claremore, Okla., Rebecca Nichols of Brighton, Mass., and Steven Nichols of Shreveport; seven great-grandchildren, Shellina (Manny) Nunez, Paigan Comardelle, Heath Gray, Chelsie Gray, all of Thibodaux, Hannah Self of Claremore, Okla., Kennedy and Jacques Besson, both of Thibodaux; and two great-great-grandchildren, Rylan Nunez and Marley Roberts, both of Thibodaux.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 60 years, Mildred Grabert Cheramie; brothers, Odeno Cheramie and Justillien Griffin; sister, Gertie Ledet; and granddaughter, Wendy Cheramie Comardelle.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. today, March 17, at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Golden Meadow. His ashes will be placed in the church mausoleum.
