Lawrence S. Melancon Jr., 79, a native of Gramercy, La., and a resident of Thibodaux, La., died Sunday, Aug. 30.


He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marian Deslattes Melancon; five children, Dr. David Melancon and wife Shirley of Houma, La., Brenda M. Melancon and husband Reginald of Paulina, La., JoEllen Bourgeois and husband David of Houma, Randall Melancon and wife Lisa of Thibodaux, La., and Dr. Daniel Melancon and wife Gayle of Houma; two sisters, Gayle Anne Deroche and Delores Didier; 11 grandchildren, Ryan Melancon, Aimee Melancon, Jennifer Vosburg, Michelle LeBlanc, Matthew and Brian Bourgeois, Erica Guillermo, Michael Melancon, and Stacy, Kelsey and Mason Melancon; and six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Luke and Nicholas Vosburg, Kate and Landree LeBlanc, and Sophia Bourgeois.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Agnes Melancon Sr.; two sisters, Norma Lousteau and Thelma Marse; and one brother, James Melancon Sr.

He was a faithful husband, devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the VFW. He loved to dance and was an active member of the Houma Chapter of the Cajun-French Music Association. He was also a competitive runner and an avid sports fan.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Thibodaux Funeral Home and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at St. Genevieve Church in Thibodaux. Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery in Thibodaux.

Landry’s Funeral Home in Thibodaux is in charge of the arrangements.
