Brother Leroy Lyons, 71, a native of Terrebonne Parish and a resident of Houma, La., died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008.


He is survived by his mother, Emma M. L. McGee; daughters, Nichole L. and husband, Deacon Glenn Williams, and Lisa L. and husband, Deacon Francis Kouame; brothers, Preston McGee and wife, Lorean, Donald McPherson and wife, Debbie, and Christopher McPherson, all of Houma; sisters, Virginia McGee Townsend and Patricia A. McGee; grandchildren, Brennan A. Lyons, Brodrick N. Lyons, Jean Francois J. Kouame, Braeana F. Williams, Bravian N. Williams, Heaven Leigh Joy Kouame and Bryla Dot Lee Williams; godchildren, Mark Dillard, Dedrianna Calloway and Roy Joyce Jr.; and three of his best friends, Junius Dillard, Fellman Matthews and Willie Newton.


He was preceded in death by his former wife and best friend, Dorothy P. Lyons; his father, Usan Lyons; brother, Raymond Lyons; and sister, Molly McGee.

He was Baptist and a member of New Rising Sun Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a 1955 graduate of Southdown High School. He was the first African American carrier for the U.S. Postal service and retiree. He was also New Rising Sun Baptist Church treasurer for 48 years and a member of their Deacon and Trustee Board. He was the first African American elected as a member of the Terrebonne Parish School Board and was also a former president. He was a member of Blaine C. Clay Lodge No. 14, a member of Southern University’s Quarterback Club, a former board member of Waterworks District No. 1, a member of the Terrebonne Parish Lions Club, and a former coach of Terrebonne Parish Recreation Department. He was a 1959 graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. He received the Mr. New Rising Sun Baptist Church Award, a former teacher in the Terrebonne Parish School System and a member of Union Benevolent Association.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at New Rising Sun Baptist Church in Houma with funeral services to follow. He will be buried at Union Benevolent Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
