Margaret Theresa Toups, 84, a native and resident of St. Charles Community, died after a long illness at her home Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010.

Ms. Toups taught at St. Charles Elementary School until her retirement. She was active in the Catholic Church Community, and conducted CCD classes at the church and served as the organist.


After graduating from Mount Carmel Academy in Thibodaux, she attended Loyola University in New Orleans, where she was a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Church Choir. Ms. Toups was among students chosen to sing with the New Orleans Symphony at the Municipal Auditorium. She would go on to earn a master’s degree in music.


An accomplished pianist and teacher, she was a member of Phi Beta, National Woman’s Honorary Professional Fraternity.

She is survived by brothers, Phillip Sr., Joseph Jr. and Louis Toups; and sister, Dorothy Clarissa Toups.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Sr. and Laura Sevin Toups; brothers, Francis, Paul and Leo Toups; and sister, Katherine Marie Toups.

She is buried at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Cemetery in Thibodaux.

Landry’s Funeral Home of Thibodaux is in charge of arrangements.
