Martha LaCoste Bergeron, 79, a native of Bayou Shaffer, La., and resident of Amelia, La., and Lafayette, La., died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011.

Mrs. Bergeron served on the United Houma Nation Tribal Council for 20 years. In 1999, she received the council’s Pioneer Award for her tireless work on the tribe’s bid for federal recognition and her efforts in creating the tribal logo. She also served as St. Mary Parish Constable Ward 9 and represented District 8 on the St. Mary Parish Council.


She is survived by her children, Kathleen, Deborah, Kevin (Penny) and Cynthia Bergeron; sisters, Eva Tabor, Florence Breaux and Shirley Canty; brother, Jerry LaCoste; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard LaCoste Sr. and Marie Billiot; husband, Earl Bergeron; sisters, Leola Elliott and Louise LeBlanc; and brother, Richard LaCoste Jr.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, and 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at Twin City Funeral Home with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Amelia. Burial will be at Bayou Black Cemetery. (Twin City)
