O’Neil Foret, 93, a native and resident of Raceland, La., until he moved to Trinity Neurologic Rehabilitation Center in Slidell, La., five years ago, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Tuesday, December 23.

He is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Fore McNamec and husband Wayne McNamec of Metairie, La.; one son, Patrick F. Foret and wife Sheri Crifesi McNamec of Slidell; one special son-in-law, Hamilton Dantin; one daughter-in-law, Ingrid Mueller Foret Jones; 11 grandchildren, Denise Matherne, Chris Dantin, Durell Dantin, Yvette Dufrene, Melissa Cannata, Amy Walsh, Monique McNamec, Erin Foret, Elizabeth Foret, Linia Babin and Glen Jones; 14 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Julie Chauvin Foret; one daughter, Nathalie Fore Dantin; and one son, O.J. Foret Jr. of Raceland.

He was the youngest and last surviving child of the 11 children born to his parents, Oville Fore and Victorine Arcement Foret.

He was a retired contract U.S. Mail carrier for many years. Based in Golden Meadow, La., he was responsible for the delivery of mail between Raceland and Grand Isle, La., long before there was a paved road south of Golden Meadow to Grand Isle. He was also a much-loved school-bus driver in Raceland for 25 years and an employee and volunteers at St. Mary’s Nativity Church in Raceland for many years. He was an avid gardener and loved singing and playing the piano and organ almost daily until the day before he passed away. He was a true family man of powerful Christian faith, who remained a constant inspiration and role model to his entire family and his many friends throughout his life.

A special thanks to all of the staff at Trinity Neurologic Rehabilitation Center for the excellent and compassionate care he received.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, December 27, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Raceland with mass to follow. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Samart Funeral Home in Cut Off, La., is in charge of the arrangements.
