Robert David “Speck” Gros, 55, a native and resident of Thibodaux, La., died at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, January 10.


He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Darlene Rhodes Gros; daughter, Allison Marie Gros and companion Varnam Ponville; brothers, Edmond Gros Jr. and wife Maria Fernandez Gros, and Ronald Gros and wife Virgie Benoit Gros; sisters, Mary Susan Hoffmann and husband Ted Hoffmann Jr., Judith Mathieu and husband Maurice Mathieu, Emily Patton, Ruth Thibodeaux and husband Ronald Thibodeaux, and Laura Ellender and husband Abby Ellender; mother-in-law, Ethel Legendre Rhodes; sisters-in-law, Sheila Rhodes Thibodeaux and husband Charles Thibodeaux, and Penny Rhodes; aunts, Marie Orgeron Rahm and Theresa Sposito Gaubert; uncles, Edward Gros and Harold Orgeron; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmond Gros Sr. and Lucy Mae Gaubert Gros; father-in-law, Lawrence J. Rhodes Jr.; and brother-in-law, Harold L. Patton.


He graduated from E.D. White Catholic High School in 1971 and was recently honored as a member of the 1968 and 1969 State Championship football teams. He was an outstanding electrician, being trained by his father, and he began his career with Gaubert & Gros Electrical Contractors. He was proudly employed by National Oilwell Varco, formerly Welch Sales & Service Inc. of Larose, La., since 1996. He also helped wire numerous homes for Habitat for Humanity.

He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting, and loved to have a seafood boil or to shuck and eat oysters. In October, he visited his favorite vacation spot, Disney World, with his family and in November he enjoyed a week-long deer hunting trip near Austin, Tx., with his sister and nephews. He will be missed and loved by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to the Robert D. Gros Benefit Fund at any Whitney National Bank branch.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 14, at Samart-Mothe Funeral Home in Raceland, La.
