Sheriff’s ranges give public a new target

Samuel “Sam” Eugene Bates Jr., 70, a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., and resident of Houma, La., died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010.


Mr. Bates served in the U.S. Navy, Tennessee National Guard and was also a Vietnam veteran, having served in the 82nd Airborne Rangers, paratroopers and U.S. Army. He received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, a parachutist and an infantryman’s badge. He was honorably discharged.

Mr. Bates was a paint supervisor inspector at Dolphin Service. He also worked for Contrelle Fencing.


He is survived by six great-grandchildren, Cole Mickayla, Abrielle and Danielle Hinze, Randy and Gage Villaloboz; stepson, David (Cindy) Hinze Jr.; daughter, Billie Jo (Chris) Currier; stepdaughters, Peggy (Adam) Fitch and Judy (fiancé Brian Todd) Hinze; brother, Joe Bates; stepbrothers, Doyle (Rynette) and Harold Camp; seven grandchildren, Devin, Dustin and Chaselyn Currier, Joshua and David Hinze, and Janea and Steve Hanzik.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Lirette Bates; parents, Samuel Sr. and Nina Lusford Bates, and stepmother, Hester Bates; and one granddaughter, Alicea Hanzik.

He is buried at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2.
