Sister Margaret Mary Landry, 96, a native of Rayne, La., died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010.

Sister Margaret Mary was in the 77th year of her religious profession. She was a Sister of Mount Carmel and a teacher. She was born Genevieve Adea Landry. She entered the Congregation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Sept. 5, 1930, made her first profession on Aug. 2, 1933 and pronounced perpetual vows Aug. 3, 1936. She graduated from Mount Carmel in New Iberia in 1929. She received her bachelor of arts degree with a major in French and a minor in Latin and History from Loyola University in New Orleans and earned a master’s degree in Theology from Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. in 1956. She also received a master’s degree in English from Catholic University in Washington, DC in 1967.


Sister Mary Margaret taught from 1933 to 1971 at Mount Carmel schools in Paincourtville, Carencro, New Iberia, Thibodaux, Rayne, St. Dominic, St. James Major and Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans, Abbeville and Lafayette. From 1976 – 1987 she served as coordinator and director of religious education in New Iberia, Lafayette and for St. Ann Parish in Houma. From 1987-2000 Sister Margaret Mary taught children at Cub Corner and adult scripture classes in St. Dominic Parish and at the Motherhouse. She received the “Outstanding Teacher of the Year” honor from the Lafayette Parish Council, awarded the Degree of Paladin Leader and the Devoted Oxnard Teacher award. She resided at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center from 2001 until Hurricane Katrina when she relocated to the Golden Age of Welsh in Welsh, La. and later moved to Eastridge Nursing Home, Abbeville where she remained until her death.


She is survived by her brother, Dennis Paul Landry; and two sisters, Mrs. Delta Morris and Mrs. Delia “Dee” Orlopp.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Louis Landry; and four sisters, Mrs. Ads Mier, Mrs. Zena Hamilton, Mrs. Virginia Morris and Monica Patricia Landry.

She is interred at St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery.
