Thelma “Tot” Burns Chauvin, 83, a native of Lake Chicot, La., and resident of Verdunville, La., died Sunday, April 15, 2012.


Mrs. Chauvin lived the first 20 years of her life on a houseboat on Bayou Smith. She was a school boat pilot going up and down the rivers and bayous picking up children to attend school on Hog Island Pass.


She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Walter Chauvin Jr.; children, Walter III (Darlene) Chauvin, Ava (Raymond) Young and Heidi (Bart) Polito; brother, Donald Burns Sr.; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Mae Burns; brother, Ernest Burns; and sisters, Birdie Sauce, Vivian Carter, Sadie Aucoin and Katherine Marcotte.

Burial was at Teche Gardens Cemetery. (Ibert’s)
