Vendon J. Callais, 83, a native and resident of Golden Meadow, La., died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010.


Mr. Callais was Catholic. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II. He worked on shrimp and fish boats before becoming chief of police of the town of Golden Meadow.


He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ella Mae Alario Callais; son, Gary (Linda) Callais; daughter, Janis Callais Cuneo; sisters, Anna Reed, Lovenia LaCoste Vernise Pellegrin and Lorraine Boudreaux; three grandchildren, Amy Landry, Donny Callais and Tara Babin; and seven great-grandchildren, Lani, Kal, Halle, Braden, Elise, Jake and Emma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcial and Olivet Anselmi Callais; three infant children; brothers, Marcial Jr. and Golden Callais; and sisters, Loriedia Dufrene and Berline Falgoust.

He is buried at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church Cemetery in Golden Meadow.

Samart-Mothe Funeral Home of Cut Off is in charge of arrangements.
