Vernon W. Hawkins, 82, a resident of Morgan City, La., died at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011.


Mr. Hawkins was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received the World War II Victory and Army of Occupation of Japan Medals. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. As a design engineer for General Dynamics-Electric Boat Division, he was proud to have participated in the development of the world’s first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus, commissioned in 1954. He was a reserved and private person who expressed his love and concern through giving of his time to others.


He is survived by his wife, Patricia Hawkins; daughters, Vicki (Michael Sr.) Jones, and Valerie Hawkins; grandson, Michael Jones Jr.; granddaughter, Jocelyn Magsumbol; and sister, Virginia Eggleston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Laura and Allen Hawkins; brother, George Hawkins; and sister, June Hawkins.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church with services to follow. Interment will be at Morgan City Mausoleum. (Jones)
