Delvin “DJ” Joseph Lirette Jr., 73, a native and lifelong resident of Chauvin, Louisiana passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2023.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joanna Hutchinson Lirette; sons, Desaire and Brian (Kathy) Lirette; brother, Richard “Ricky” Lirette; sisters, Eleanor Lirette and Ida Cherry; grandchildren, Brandon (Madelyn), Kayleigh (Jansen), Logan (Kyler), and Shaye Lirette; great-grandchildren, Dawson and Benson Lirette, and Beau Keel; sisters-in-law, Antoinette Dupre, Paula (Tete) Lebouef, and Roxanne Hutchinson; and fur baby, Red.


DJ is preceded in death by his parents, Delvin “Papoose” and Rosalie Lebouef Lirette; sisters, Elaine and Barbara Lirette; grandson, Zachary “Zac” Lirette; in-laws, Anthony “Ton” and Marion “Sista” Hotard Hutchinson; brothers-in-law, Lyle LeCompte, Gerald and Todd Hutchinson, Tony Dupre, and Dudley Faciane.

DJ served our country in Vietnam during which he received a Purple Heart in 1971. He is a Veteran of Foreign War member. After recovering from his war injuries, he pursued shrimping as his profession. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren about hunting and fishing.

The family wants to thank the staff of TGMC’s CCW and Respiratory teams, the staff of AMG, Dr. Dickie Haydel and partners, and the TGMC Pulmonary Care physicians for their care and support during DJ’s two and a half month illness.


Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 29, 2023 from 9:30am to 11:30am, with Military Honors to begin at 11am and followed by the Mass at 11:30am, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Chauvin.

Samart Funeral Home of Houma, LLC is in charge of arrangements.
