Dear Editor,

Less than a year ago, the People of Terrebonne Parish, coastal Louisiana and many parts of the United States were faced with the threat of massive flood insurance rate increases as a reult of the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012.

Catastrophic rate increases were on the horizon and, more importantly, many in Washington, D.C., had little appetite to fix this problem. The outlook was bleak.

We quickly began to work with local and regional leaders to develop a solution. Michael Hecht and Caitlin Berni from GNO Inc. served as the catalyst for action as all realized the extent to which the economy of our region and nation was threatened. In a matter of months, the GNO Inc. team built a coalition of leaders from over 30 states and 200 business, civic and industry organizations. The coalition worked tirelessly to educate lawmakers of the negative impacts of Biggert-Waters. After many uncertain months, the U.S. House and Senate overwhelmingly voted to fix the damaging provisions of Biggert-Waters.

I cannot overstate the tremendous work done by GNO Inc. to solve this problem. Homeowners across the nation owe GNO Inc. a huge debt of gratitude. Terrebonne Parish would not have survived if Biggert-Waters remained in effect. My heartfelt thanks to Michael and Caitlin!

Michel Claudet,

Terrebonne Parish President,

Houma, La.
