With Memorial Day fast approaching, it is important that we remember and express our deep gratitude to the heroes who sacrificed for our freedom.

Recently, our community lost one of these heroes. Though his life did not end in combat, Mr. Pete Bourgeois was indeed a patriot who honorably defended our country and advanced the cause of liberty. Mr. Pete’s legacy of sacrifice and service will live forever.

Drafted to the military in the 1940’s, Mr. Pete served in the 96th Infantry Division during World War II – where he was wounded in battle. Due to his injuries, Mr. Pete received the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars.

Following his military service – Mr. Pete returned home to Terrebonne Parish and served our community as a businessman, city councilman and police juror. He also served on the Terrebonne Library Board, Commander of American Legion Post 31 and as a charter member of the World War II Museum in New Orleans.

Ronald Reagan stated it best, “Those who say that we’re in a time when there are no heroes, they just don’t know where to look.”

May we never forget heroes, like Mr. Pete, who have given us the gift of freedom. May we never forget what it means to be free. And may we never forget those who fought, bled, and died for it. •
