Police deserve better consideration

Dear Editor,

As the years pass by in this tired old body, I always seem to find things in this world harder and more complicated to accept or understand. Not a single day does by where I might say, “Man, today is going to be a good day like I had in my heyday.”

My heyday (late ‘40s, early ‘50s) was by far not such a great day, but, by all means, isn’t a day like I witness today. No love, no caring, no respect. What a messed up world. Maybe this letter might help to bring back at least some respect.

The respect I am referring to will be about the people least respected than the American veteran. The American veteran lost that respect after and during the Korean War. I’m talking about the people who protect you while you are sleeping, partying, praying, studying, running, walking or just sitting – the policeman or policewoman or the “cop” as they are mostly called today.

Wouldn’t it be nice if a kid or adult would walk up to a cop and shake his or her hand and say, “Thank you for your service and thanks for keeping me safe.” Wow! Wouldn’t that be awesome? But, all you hear is “pig,” “killer” or whatever else comes out of their mouths and enters their minds. These people risk their lives every time they put on that uniform and many while out of their uniforms. I know the first thing you will say is “they make that choice.” But, can you picture this city and parish without policemen and policewomen? I know for one I don’t want to be around if these great men and women are not around to protect us. They deserve much more, and we are the ones who can start and finish our tribute to these “cops.” Let’s not put this grave injustice aside any longer.

We can start by having T-shirts made with a policeman or policewoman on the front with “Thank a Cop” on the back. All proceeds would go to the police society for any police officer and his or her family who need financial assistance. We would have to make these T-shirts reasonably priced within everybody’s needs. Of course, all and any donations would be accepted. We must wear these shirts so the public would see them and not be hung up in the house and collect dust. Be proud that you were able to help a “cop” before it’s too late. Let’s show these people that we want to help their jobs be a little more pleasant. Let’s also show these outstanding men and women that the job they do.

Let’s get this “Thank a Cop” going, and you will see nothing but smiling faces in those uniforms.
